James W. Nemitz, Ph.D., president of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, speaks to the media during the WV Press Association's Legislative Lookahead. Nemitz said there need to be incentives for physicians to stay here. He spoke to one who said he could make more money, with no income tax, in Florida but he stays here for his family and because he works to serve. This means the Legislature needs to prioritize higher education funding, Nemitz said. The WVSOM president was joined by Elizabeth Pellegrin, Vandalia Health vice president and chief marketing officer; and Stephen Pachuta, DDS, WVU School of Dentistry Dean, on the panel Jan. 5 at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston, W.Va.
The WVSOM community gathered to enjoy food and friendship in the WVSOM Student Center on Friday. The theme of the school’s annual Holiday Luncheon was "home for the holidays," evoking the warm feeling of celebrating with friends and family.
Message from President James W. Nemtz, Ph.D.:
The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) will forever be indebted to our founders and first president who created our institution to educate students to become osteopathic physicians to serve the medical needs of residents of West Virginia, Appalachia and beyond.
WVSOM was founded on December 12, 1972, so on this day we honor and celebrate our founders and first president:
Carlton Apgar, D.O., Founder, Huntington, W.Va.
O.J. Bailes, D.O., Founder, Princeton, W.Va.
Donald Newell Sr., D.O., Founder, Oak Hill, W.Va.
Frank Wallington, D.O., Founder, Moundsville, W.Va.
Roland P. Sharp, D.O., First President, Marlinton, W.Va.
It was my honor as president of WVSOM to establish the Founders Day Celebration in 2022 as part of our 50th anniversary celebration, but also to continue the recognition annually as a tribute to the visionaries responsible for starting our osteopathic medical school.
Today, I hope all students, employees and guests will have an opportunity to join me in the Conference Center from 2:30 – 4:30 pm for a social event to honor our Founders, celebrate the history of WVSOM and enjoy the holiday season with food, fellowship and, of course, chocolate.
